A POACHING investigator is battling for life in Harare after he was attacked by suspected poachers in Beitbridge on Sunday.

National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday confirmed the incident, saying the victim was a 28-year-old anti-poaching investigator who had successfully busted an ivory smuggling syndicate leading to the arrest of two dealers.

“He was airlifted to Harare and his condition is serious. They blocked his way as he drove out of Beitbridge to Harare and attacked him,” he said.

The attackers were travelling in an unregistered Honda Fit and a white Toyota Allex, whose plates were folded, he said.

“He had led to the arrest of Giveous Moyo Maputo and Joe Manyangadze, while another suspect escaped. We suspect he had the ivory which is yet to be accounted for, “Nyathi said.

NewsDay understands that the incident occurred on Sunday at Matshiloni, 40km north of Beitbridge town.

In a tweet, Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesman Tinashe Farawo also confirmed the attack saying the victim was employed by the International AntiPoaching Foundation.

Nyathi said Mauto and Manyangadze would appear in court soon.
