HISTORIAN Pathisa Nyathi says Africans are failing to embrace Africanism, resulting in many accommodating Western cultures and values.

Nyathi said the dominance of colonialism has made Africans underestimate and neglect their culture.

“Africans are still lagging behind in terms of embracing their culture. Its people are no longer proud to be Africans. You can tell through their food, music, dance, clothing and values. It’s no longer the Africa we used to know,” Nyathi said, after the country celebrated Africa Day on Wednesday.

“Eating traditional fruits and food is now occasional, instead it should be a daily routine because that is who we are as Africans and what is worrying is the fact that the big supermarkets have not yet started to fully sell these traditional foods which is a step behind in appreciating our culture.”

“Nowadays we do not even know how to dress properly like what we used to do in the past. Africa is the heart of all. Let’s all celebrate, dance and be proud of who we are. Let our true identity flourish and be elevated from one generation to another,” he said.
