„ HOW TO SCARE AWAY BURGLARS

An ex-burglar has revealed the US$8 item which would deter him from targeting certain houses - and homeowners can easily get their hands on one.

The anonymous man claims he would avoid houses with a 'beware of dogs ' sign on display out front.

Stating how signs with 'big dogs' such as German shepherds or Rottweilers pictured on them are most effective, he says homeowners don't even need to have a dog to be able to install a sign.

Speaking to Reddit, the man said: "Targeting a house with a dog, or mention of a dog, isn't worth it.

"I'd want to be in and out within 15 minuTes maximum and having to possibly deal with a dog would put the job at risk.

"Although not all burglars would avoid a house just because it has a warning sign, but they would be stupid to when there's an easier house right next door."

But with dog thefts at a seven year high, some users raised their concerns about a 'beware of dogs' sign alerting pet nappers to their home.

One user said: "I have a dog and wouldn't install a sign like this because I feel like it's saying 'hey, I have a dog, come inside and take her'.

"I just keep the outside lights on instead and I haven't been robbed yet - touch wood!"

While another user added: "I moved house recently and decided to spend £2 on a 'beware of the dog' sign to display prominently in the window near my front door. There is another one on the back gate.

"I have had a steady stream of friends and family come to the new house for the first time since I moved and almost every single one of them has commented about how they weren't sure they got the right place because they knew I didn't have a dog.

"As a burglar is less likely to target a house where they believe a dog lives then I believe having a sign on display is a small but worthwhile investment. It won't make you bulletproof but it could certainly help."

A third user said: "I have a 'beware of camera' sign and it works just as good, I think."
